Some of these sites used to have ‘free’ music at one point, but most have switched to a pay-per use. Check them out and I hope you can find something you can use!

Essential Free Software for Filmmakers

Here are some free software options that I use all the time!

• Levelator –  Audio “level’izer”
Instantly adjusts all of your audio levels to one quality level.
Basically, have you ever recorded an interview in which you and your guest ended up at different volumes? Well, this fixes that. Drag-and-drop any WAV or AIFF file onto The Leveler’s application window, and a few moments later you’ll find a new version which just sounds better. *Thanks to Bill Mecca for referring me to this!

• Squared 5 – MPEG Streamclip video converter for Mac and Windows
Convert DVD files to mov, transcode media into different formats, crop video and more!

• HandBrake – Video Transcoder
An open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.

MediaInfo  – View the Technical data from video and audio files.
A great way to inspect detailed settings of video files for troubleshooting issues or comparing rendered videos for consistancy or optimization.  Personally, I use this tool to learn better rendering settings by analyzing high quality videos.

Free Software

Video Editing

• Windows Live Essentials: Movie Maker – Windows – Microsoft
Quickly add photos and footage from your PC or camera into Movie Maker. Then fine tune your movie just the way you want it.

Audio Recording/ Editing

• Audacity
Free, open source, cross-platform software for recording and editing sounds

Image Editing

• Gimp – GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program.
(Similar to the features available with Adobe Photoshop)

Random Free Elements for Filmmakers

• Free light leaks and film burns to download – ProRes HD
High definition clips for use by editors and compositors. They work with any editing package. By layering them over your images, using a compositing style such as ‘screen’ you add colour and interest – reminiscent of old style film effects.

• Free Movie & Motion Clips from CreativeSwap.com
You can get FREE clips and Mini Movies along with clips that you can buy for title backdrops, transitions and anything else you may have need for in your next production.

Trial Software

NOTE: I am not endorsing or being sponsored by any of the software listed here.  This is a list of software that I’ve actually used or tested myself at one time or another.  There are many options available online for free software, but I wanted to provide a list of software that I think works as described and is useful.
